ULU, Malet ST. London WC1 – The Bloomsbury Suite, 2nd Floor Saturday 2pm – 5pm  £15/£10

The New Lacanian School (NLS) has taken as a point of departure the fourth part of Lacan’s Seminar X, Anxiety, with the title ‘The Five Forms of the Object a.  This follows Jacques-Alain Miller’s proposal earlier as a guide for the World Association of Psychoanalysis’s congress in April 2008 on ‘The objects a in the Analytic Experience’.  The NLS will contribute to the research by way of a particular slant, that of the body.

The London Society in turn will take up its own strand of work on the object a, with each presenter having chosen the aspect of object a which interests them.

Our work is underpinned by the historical development of object a as it emerges in the seminars which are available in English. From ‘The Thing’ (Das Ding) through to Lacan’s seminar X L’Angoisse (Anxiety – untranslated) to object a and the gaze, separation, self-mutilation, the lost object and its use in Seminar XVII  The Other Side of Psychoanalysis and transformation in seminar XX Encore.  The distinction between the clinic of the phallus and the clinic of object a also emerges.

In order to integrate our work with this historical perspective, a reporter will comment on emerging themes in each session.  This commentary will be circulated.
