The Seminar of the New Lacanian School

The NLS Seminar is an annual programme of monthly seminars run by the London Society. Very experienced analysts from the Ecole de la Cause Freudienne or associated schools come to speak on the year’s topic. Their talks are transcribed and edited to appear in a volume by the same name: The NLS-Seminar.

We regret that the seminars are - at the moment - out of print. We should be able to offer them again soon. Please email us to request a notification when they are republished.

Love & Knowledge in Psychoanalysis

NLS-SEMINAR 2004-2005: Love & Knowledge in Psychoanalysis

A commentary on Jacques Lacan’s Seminar XX, Encore

Alexandre Stevens: “Being the Other, in the most radical sense, in the sexual relationship, in relation to what can be said of the unconscious, woman is that which has a relationship to that Other.” (Encore p.81)

Marcel Eydoux:” Doesn’t this jouissance one experiences and yet knows nothing about put us on the path of ex-sistence?” (Encore p.77)

Jean-Louis Gault: “The Other, in my terminology, can thus only be the Other sex.” (Encore P.39)

Marie-Hélène Brousse: “They [women analysts] haven’t contributed one iota to the question of feminine sexuality. There must be an internal reason for that, related to the structure of the apparatus of jouissance.” (Encore p.57-8)

Pierre Skriabine: "The unconscious is the fact that being, by speaking, enjoys, and wants to know nothing more about it.” (Encore p.105)

Jean-Pierre Klotz: “True love gives way to hatred” (Encore p.146)

Pierre Naveau: “The signifier is the cause of jouissance…[ ]…the signifier is what brings jouissance to a halt.” (Encore p.24)

Pierre-Gilles Guéguen: “I don’t want to know anything about it.” (Encore p.1)

NLS Seminar in London 2003 - 2004:
Kant With Sade - Fantasy and the Limits of Enjoyment

The London Society’s NLS seminar of 2003-2004 centred around Jacques Lacan’s ‘Kant avec Sade’ from the French ‘Écrits’ (Seuil, 1966).

The texts in this collection were transcribed from the spoken NLS seminar in London. The transcription of the seminars has sought to retain the informal style.

The speakers were: Jean-Louis Gault (Nantes), Alexandre Stevens (Brussels), Vicente Palomera (Barcelona), Pierre-Gilles Guéguen (Paris) and Pierre Naveau (Paris). All are distinguished members of the Ecole de la Cause Freudienne, have been coming to speak in London for many years; formerly under the aegis of the Freudian Field, and now within the New Lacanian School.

Jean-Louis Gault - The 'Truth' of Kant's Moral Law

Alexandre Stevens - The Paradox of the Universal

Vicente Palomera - The Sadean Fantasy

Pierre-Gilles Guéguen - Desire and Jouissance

Pierre Naveau - The Mother-Daughter Relationship

73 Pages, A4 paperback.  The speakers all referred to the translation of Lacan's text by J.B. Swenson, entitled ‘Kant with Sade’ in ‘October’ (MIT Press, Mass., 1989).
